Apart from the different transducer depths, – we have undergone rigorous training and personally experienced both TGA approved systems before making our decision. This is not to say that other systems (provided they are TGA approved) are not effective, it is just that with all other things being equal.
Also, it only requires sufficient time to denature collagen fibres; “cooking” the tissues is not necessary to obtain the end result of skin tightening. Prolonged exposure at even low temperatures (say 49 degrees Celsius) is sufficient to cause thermal burns. In fact, excessive heating by unregulated systems (with unknown energy levels) has caused burns and eventual scarring in some unwitting patients.
ADVERSE EFFECTS:
As with all procedures, there are certain minor risks involved. Apart from mild discomfort during treatment, there may be slight redness immediately after treatment which will subside in a few hours. There may be a swelling, tingling or tenderness which may last for a few days. Occasionally, some people experience nerve irritation. When a sensory nerve has been affected, temporary numbness may be present in a certain area, which typically resolves in a few days or weeks. Similarly, when a motor nerve has been affected, there may be muscle weakness which is also transient.
There is also a very small risk of burns, but this is typically very minor due to the speed of the procedure and the precision of the machine. Again, operator experience is extremely important when choosing a treatment provider.
Patients who have dental fillings should inform the operator prior to the procedure, as this may result in localised heating of the metals and require special precautions be taken. Extra care also has to be taken in individuals suffering from neurological disorders and sensitive skin.
TREATMENT REGIMES:
Generally a single treatment is sufficient, depending on the level of skin tightening required. While the collagen production is permanent, it is subject to the same damage and breakdown as all other tissues in our body as we all continue to age. A refresh session can be done at any point from 6 months onwards.
